Mao Yu Shu

Mao Yu Shu, or The Story of the Fishing Child, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and released in 1959. It is a hallmark of the studio's golden age, reflecting a concerted effort to integrate traditional Chinese artistic techniques into modern animation. The film utilizes the style of traditional Chinese ink-wash painting, creating a fluid, atmospheric visual language that prioritizes artistic grace over the rigid frame-by-frame realism seen in Western animation at the time.

The narrative is rooted in Chinese folklore, telling the story of a boy who emerges from a painted scroll to punish a greedy landlord. It was directed by Wan Guchan, a pioneer of the medium who sought to establish a unique national identity for Chinese animation. The film received significant domestic acclaim for its technical innovation and cultural resonance, serving as a primary example of the 'national school' of animation that defined the studio's creative output during the mid-twentieth century.
