While looking for the legendary Mapman, the last surviving member of the Nomad Star tribe, Lipumira finds him in Tokyo. His name is Tokishima Gen and he is the only one who can retrieve one part of the star map hidden within the Earth.
After retrieving the piece, Gen must make a decision to either follow Lipumira in her foolhardy search to find the remaining pieces of the star map or rather stay on Earth. He decides to leave Earth, only to find out that his girlfriend has beaten him to the spaceship since she wants to come along as well. Unfortunately, as Gen learns the secret of the star map, Lipumira's sisters appear, planning to stop her at any cost.

Where it came from
Released in 1994, the MAPS OVA series by Studio KSS serves as an adaptation of the popular science fiction light novel series written by Hayashi Kiyoshi. Emerging during a period when space opera anime was finding a dedicated niche in the home video market, the production sought to distill the sprawling, philosophical journey of the novels into a more condensed visual format. It captures the essence of the original source material's cosmic exploration and the recurring themes of existential discovery within a high-stakes interstellar setting.
The character designs and animation style were crafted to reflect the aesthetic trends of early 1990s Japanese animation, focusing on a balance between detailed mechanical spacecraft and expressive character archetypes. While the series faced the inherent challenges of adapting dense prose into a limited OVA format, it remains a notable entry in the studio's catalog for fans of the era. Its reception was largely characterized by the loyalty of the existing fan base who appreciated seeing their favorite characters translated from page to screen during the golden age of the OVA market.
