Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

Mardock Scramble: The First Compression was released in 2010 as the inaugural entry in a three-part anime film adaptation of Tow Ubukata's science fiction light novel series. Produced by GoHands and directed by Susumu Kudo, the project was designed to translate the series' dense, hyper-violent cyberpunk aesthetic into a visually distinct cinematic experience. The film focuses on the protagonist Rune Balot, a young girl resurrected as a cyborg, and leans heavily into a stylized, digital-heavy animation aesthetic that was intended to mirror the technological decay of the Mardock City setting.

The adaptation was met with critical interest for its ambitious visual style and dark, mature themes, which diverged from the more common trends in contemporary anime. Character designs by Shingo Suzuki and Kishida Takahiro were crafted to contrast the organic vulnerability of the characters against the cold, mechanical backdrop of their environment. Upon its debut, the film established a cult following, cementing the reputation of the franchise for its uncompromising tone and its innovative use of CGI integration within a traditional 2D framework.
