Mardock Scramble: The Third Exhaust

Mardock Scramble: The Third Exhaust serves as the final installment in the film trilogy adaptation of Tow Ubukata's science fiction light novel series. Produced by GoHands and released in 2012, the film concludes the narrative arc of Rune Balot, a young woman resurrected as a cyborg to seek justice. The production maintained the series' signature aesthetic, characterized by a hyper-stylized, high-contrast visual language that emphasizes the grit of the Mardock City setting.

The film was directed by Susumu Kudo, who worked to balance the source material's heavy philosophical inquiries into consciousness and identity with the demands of an action-heavy finale. Upon its release, the trilogy was noted for its experimental use of 3D-assisted animation and its unflinching commitment to the dark, cyberpunk tone established in the preceding entries. It remains a notable example of early 2010s efforts to push the boundaries of cinematic anime production.
