Maria the Virgin Witch

Maria the Virgin Witch, known in Japan as Junketsu no Maria, was adapted from the manga by Masayuki Ishikawa and produced by the acclaimed studio Production I.G. Airing in 2015, the series is set during the Hundred Years' War in France and centers on a powerful witch named Maria who attempts to prevent local conflicts by using her magic to disrupt battlefields, drawing the ire of the church and eventually the archangel Michael. The narrative explores the intersection of religious dogma, political maneuvering, and personal agency, grounding its fantastical elements in a gritty, historically inspired medieval setting.

The series design aesthetic reflects a meticulous effort to balance the period-accurate costumes and architectural styles of the 15th century with the expressive character designs typical of seinen anime. Directed by Goro Taniguchi, the production aimed for a philosophical tone, encouraging viewers to consider the complexity of morality during wartime. Critics and audiences largely received the work as a thoughtful subversion of the typical magical girl tropes, praising its thematic ambition and the studio's ability to render historical chaos with fluid, detailed animation.
