Summer has arrived at last, and with it comes the promise of summer break for the students of Lillian Girls’ Academy. Sachiko and Yumi retreat to the summer home of the Ogasawara family for a season of rest and relaxation, but their rosy trip soon sours when some old friends of Sachiko’s unexpectedly drop in. These wealthy snobs turn up their noses at Yumi and Sachiko’s relationship — and if Yumi isn’t careful, her blissful summer at Sachiko’s side could come to an abrupt and tearful end.

Where it came from
The Maria Watches Over Us 3rd Season OVA was released in 2006 as a direct continuation of the anime adaptation of Oyuki Konno’s light novel series. Produced by Studio DEEN, this series of OVAs served to bridge the narrative gaps between the second and third television seasons, specifically focusing on the intimate social dynamics of the Lillian Girls’ Academy. The production aimed to maintain the gentle, contemplative aesthetic established in the earlier installments, prioritizing character development and emotional nuance over traditional plot progression.
The design and animation direction were handled by Studio DEEN’s creative team, who sought to translate the soft, shojo-inspired illustrations of artist Reine Hibiki into a fluid, atmospheric visual style. By utilizing a restrained color palette and focusing on close-up character interaction, the series was received by fans as a faithful extension of the source material. It remains a hallmark of the slice-of-life genre, praised for its careful pacing and its earnest depiction of the refined, disciplined world of the academy.
