Synopsis

Despite being a refugee from an extinct planet, having an alcoholic as a father and an airhead for a mother, Maris' biggest problem is that she's a Thanatosian. Considering that Thanatosians are six times stronger than the average Earthling it shouldn't be such a curse, especially in a galaxy where violence is rife. But the accidental destruction she wreaks on everything she touches —even with the exotic alloy restraints she wears— means she's constantly in debt. Every mission she's assigned to by the Inter-Galactic Space Patrol becomes a cash-drain when all the damages are docked from her wage.

But when she's selected to rescue the rich and sexy Kogane Maru it's like a dream come true. After setting him free from the terror of his ruthless kidnapper his eternal gratitude will surely guarantee marriage —and an end to all her financial headaches.

Provenance

Where it came from

Maris the Chojo was produced by Studio Pierrot and released as an original video animation in 1986. The project was adapted from a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi, who is celebrated for her ability to blend slapstick comedy with eccentric science fiction tropes. The story follows a young woman named Maris, a clumsy but supernaturally strong bounty hunter, as she navigates a chaotic space opera environment.

The animation reflects the high-energy aesthetic common to mid-1980s Japanese animation, drawing heavy inspiration from American superhero comics and classic space adventures. While Takahashi's manga was well-regarded for its humor, the OVA is often noted for its frantic pacing and vibrant color palette. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted, niche title that captured the creative whimsy associated with Takahashi's early career before she gained wider international fame with series like Ranma 1/2.
