The coming-of-age battle story will center on the famous 17th-century Japanese warlord Date Masamune when he was young. The Date clan took its name from the Date region of the former Mutsu province, which comprises part of the modern-day city of Date.
The anime will be the first in the city's "Kirari na Wonder Project" (Twinkling Wonder Project), which aims to highlight tourist attractions and the appeal of the region.
Gainax's newly founded Fukushima studio will work on the anime, and will complete it at the end of March. The anime will have a private screening in April and will also screen in anime events and be posted online.

Where it came from
Masamune Datenicle was released in 2016 as a collaborative project between the Fukushima Gainax studio and the Date City municipal government. Conceived as a regional promotional initiative to revitalize tourism and celebrate local heritage, the series reimagines the life of the historical daimyō Date Masamune through a stylized, futuristic lens. By blending historical narratives with modern animation tropes, the project aimed to engage a younger demographic and provide a unique cultural identity for the region.
The character designs and animation production were handled by Studio Gaina, which sought to balance the gravity of the Sengoku period with a fast-paced, high-energy aesthetic. The design approach emphasizes bold linework and vibrant color palettes, diverging from traditional historical dramas to favor a more dynamic, action-oriented presentation. Upon its release, the series was well-received within the local community and noted for its unconventional approach to utilizing animation as a tool for public diplomacy and regional branding.
