Where it came from
Mattsu, Yamma and Moburi - The Mystery of the Seven Gems and the Flying Castle was released in 2013 as a promotional ONA (Original Net Animation). It was created to serve as a visual showcase for the conceptual capabilities of the production studio involved, operating within a context of independent short-form animation that utilizes digital tools to mimic traditional cel-shaded aesthetics. The project was intended to demonstrate fluid character movement and whimsical, adventure-oriented world-building within a limited runtime.
The character designs and animation style were crafted to evoke the spirit of classic fantasy anime, emphasizing expressive silhouettes and vibrant, high-contrast color palettes. While the title functions primarily as a niche curiosity within the broader landscape of modern web-based animation, it was received as a technically competent exercise in visual storytelling. It reflects a period when smaller production houses were increasingly turning to online distribution to test creative concepts and engage directly with global animation enthusiasts.
