Where it came from
Mayoi Neko Overrun! debuted in 2010 as a television anime series produced by studio AIC, based on the light novel series written by Tomohiro Matsu and illustrated by Peco. The project emerged during a period when high-energy, slapstick comedy anime featuring ensemble casts were particularly prominent. The narrative centers on a group of high school students who run a bakery while dealing with an abandoned girl who possesses mysterious abilities.
The series is noted for its experimental approach to animation style, as each episode featured a different director and varying artistic interpretations, a technique intended to highlight the chaotic and comedic tone of the source material. While the show was recognized for its distinctive visual diversity, its reception was varied among viewers, with opinions often split between those who appreciated the ambitious stylistic shifts and those who found the episodic inconsistency disjointed.
