McDull is not the brightest kid on the block, but he continually tries to do his best and please his mother. Although it seems that he may not be destined for great things in life as his mother wishes, McDull never gives up.
The story focuses on several tales about McDull and his childhood. This is told as a narrative reflection of a now adult McDull. These tales muddle up in imaginative uses of Cantonese and heaps of local Hong Kong culture. From tales about a turkey dinner to dreams of following in Lee Lai-shan's footsteps, McDull faces ebbs and flows with his demanding but devoted mother.

Where it came from
McDull: Gushi, released in 2001, serves as the inaugural feature film centered on the beloved Hong Kong piglet character created by Alice Mak and Brian Tse. Emerging from their earlier comic strip collaborations, the film was produced by Bliss Pictures to translate the satirical, melancholic, and deeply local humor of the McDull stories into a feature-length animation. The production was notable for its distinct visual style, which blended traditional cel animation with experimental mixed-media sequences and a soundtrack that moved between whimsical musical numbers and profound narrative depth.
The film was designed to capture the specific anxieties and modest aspirations of middle-class Hong Kong life during the post-handover period, framing the protagonist’s struggles through the lens of a dreamer living in a pragmatic city. Upon its release, it received widespread critical acclaim for its sophisticated emotional resonance, effectively transcending its categorization as a children's film to become a significant cultural touchstone for Hong Kong cinema. Its success helped establish a lasting franchise that defined a unique aesthetic in local independent animation.
