Where it came from
M.D. Geist II: Death Force was released in 1996 as a direct sequel to the 1986 original OVA, M.D. Geist. Produced by Central Park Media, the project was intended to continue the hyper-violent, post-apocalyptic saga of the titular mercenary protagonist. The production sought to capitalize on the cult status achieved by its predecessor, which had gained international notoriety for its intense aesthetic and bleak narrative tone during the late eighties home video boom.
The animation and character design for the sequel were intended to evoke the gritty, high-contrast mechanical style established in the first installment. Directed by Hayato Ikebukuro and featuring the returning input of series creator Koichi Ohata, the production aimed for a more polished look than the original while maintaining the excessive gore and mecha-centric action that defined the series. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a niche curiosity, valued by fans of the extreme violence synonymous with the '90s direct-to-video anime market.
