In the near future, humans and robots coexist. “Robattles,” a competition in which Medarot are pitted against each other, is popular among kids. A Medarot’s consciousness, effectively its brains, is located in a Medal that can be inserted into and ejected from the robot body. By chance, nine-year-old Ikki finds a Rare Medal, and soon after has his own Medarot named Metabee. This is the story of their friendship and growth as they use wisdom and courage to fight countless opponents in robot battles.

Where it came from
Medabots, known in Japan as Medarot, debuted in 1999 as a multimedia project designed to capitalize on the rising popularity of robot-battling franchises. Produced by Bee Train, the television series was based on the role-playing games developed by Natsume for the Game Boy. The animation focused on a world where children equipped their robotic companions, the Medabots, with 'Medaparts' to engage in competitive 'Robattles.' This concept tapped into the late 1990s fascination with customizable digital companions, blending traditional shonen action with strategic mechanics that resonated with a young audience.
The character and mecha designs for the series were heavily influenced by the aesthetic established in the original game source material, emphasizing the modular 'tinpet' skeleton underneath interchangeable armor sets. This design philosophy was central to the franchise's commercial appeal, mirroring the modularity of model kits and toy figures. While the series was aimed primarily at children, it gained a dedicated following for its humorous tone and the intricate, personality-driven relationships between the protagonists and their robotic partners, eventually leading to a successful international broadcast that solidified its place in the turn-of-the-millennium anime canon.
