Meitantei Holmes: Mrs. Hudson Hitojichi Jiken no Maki / Dover Kaikyou no Daikuuchuusen no Maki

This 1986 feature film adapts two specific episodes from the iconic animated series Sherlock Hound, a collaborative project between Japan's TMS Entertainment and Italy's RAI. The series was famously directed in its early stages by Hayao Miyazaki, whose whimsical, anthropomorphic vision reimagined Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters as a cast of dogs. Following creative friction and production delays, the series resumed production later under the guidance of Kyosuke Mikuriya, maintaining the high-spirited, steampunk-inspired aesthetic that defined its charm.

The film combines the 'Mrs. Hudson' and 'Dover' story arcs into a cinematic presentation. It captures the essence of the show's hallmark character designs, which were influenced by the lighthearted, adventurous tone Miyazaki aimed for, featuring intricate mechanical inventions and charmingly detailed backgrounds. While the series faced a complex release history due to copyright disputes with the Conan Doyle estate, it eventually gained a reputation as a beloved piece of animation history, appreciated for its fluid movement and the distinct personality infused into its canine versions of classic literary icons.
