Melting down

Melting down is a short animation produced by the Geidai Animation program at the Tokyo University of the Arts. As a product of one of Japan’s most prestigious art schools, the film represents the intersection of traditional artistic training and experimental digital techniques. These student-led projects are often characterized by their unconventional narrative structures and unique visual styles, serving as a platform for emerging creators to explore abstract themes before entering the professional industry.

The film emerged from a rigorous academic environment where students are encouraged to push the boundaries of animation as a fine art medium. Design choices in Geidai projects often prioritize tactile textures and philosophical exploration over commercial appeal, reflecting the individual vision of the student animator. While not designed for mass-market distribution, the work gained recognition within independent animation circles and festivals for its technical precision and the maturity of its metaphorical storytelling.
