Where it came from
The Midnight Panther OVA was produced by Green Bunny in 1998 during a period defined by a surge in experimental animation within the direct-to-video market. Released in an era when independent studios were pushing the boundaries of stylistic aesthetics, the project served as a showcase for the studio's interest in blending noir-inspired atmospheric tension with high-contrast, stylized character designs.
The visual direction was spearheaded by key creative staff at Green Bunny, who aimed to create a lean, minimalist aesthetic that relied on shadow-heavy compositions and fluid movement to carry the narrative. While the OVA remained a niche entry upon its initial release, it garnered a reputation among enthusiasts of late-90s animation for its distinct visual identity and commitment to its atmospheric, genre-driven tone.
