Where it came from
Midnight Occult Civil Servants originated as a manga series by Yoko Tamotsu, which began serialization in 2015 before being adapted into a twelve-episode television anime series by studio LIDENFILMS in 2019. The narrative centers on Arata Miyako, a government employee working in a specialized department tasked with managing supernatural entities in Shinjuku, blending urban fantasy with the bureaucratic procedural genre.
The character designs were handled by Eriko Ito, who sought to capture the series' balance between modern metropolitan settings and folklore-inspired mythology. Upon its release, the production was noted for its grounded take on folklore, focusing on the cultural coexistence between humans and 'Anothers,' rather than traditional high-fantasy combat tropes. It remains a modest entry in the supernatural subgenre, appreciated by fans of slice-of-life storytelling mixed with occult elements.
