Midoriyama Koukou Koushien-hen

Midoriyama Koukou Koushien-hen is a 1989 original video animation produced by Studio Animaruya, serving as an adaptation of the baseball manga series Midoriyama Koukou Koushien-hen by Hiroshi Motomiya. The work emerged during the height of the 1980s direct-to-video anime boom, a period when publishers frequently tapped into the popularity of shonen manga to produce short-form animation for the growing home video market.

The production sought to capture the high-stakes intensity of Japanese high school baseball, a cultural phenomenon in the country. Directed with a focus on the gritty, realistic aesthetic common to Motomiya's storytelling, the OVA aimed to translate the manga's dramatic sports narrative into a kinetic visual format. While it remains a niche entry in the canon of sports anime, it is regarded by enthusiasts of 1980s period animation as a representative example of the era's character design styles and traditional cel-based production techniques.
