Mignon

The Mignon typewriter was first introduced by the AEG company in Berlin in 1903. Designed by Friedrich von Hefner-Alteneck, it was conceived as a simpler, more affordable alternative to the complex typewriters of the era, utilizing an index-based system rather than a traditional keyboard. This design philosophy aimed to make professional writing tools accessible to a broader demographic, including students and home users, by reducing the mechanical intricacy that drove up manufacturing costs.

The machine is defined by its distinctive cylinder-based typing mechanism, where the user rotates a pointer to a character on an index plate and then presses a key to strike the paper. While it was not intended to compete with high-speed office machines, its ease of use and unique aesthetic made it a commercial success for several decades. It was well-regarded for its reliability and clever engineering, remaining in production in various iterations until the early 1930s.
