In the mid-21st century, mankind has begun the exploration of space, and one company, Planet Catcher Corporation, has pioneered capturing asteroids and comets to mine the resources within them for use on Earth. On one such asteroid, Tortatis, lives 12-year-old Nanbu Ushiwaka - the only child ever to be born in space and survive.
But survival itself is no longer guaranteed - a military satellite triggers a disaster during a operation to capture Halley`s Comet, and Ushiwaka and his fellow colonists must find a way to survive when both their country and their company abandon them. Can they escape before the nuclear reactor on the asteroid melts down? Or are they doomed to die as they lived, among the stars?

Where it came from
Mighty Space Miners was released in 1994 as a four-part original video animation series produced by KSS. Emerging during the height of the mid-1990s direct-to-video anime boom, the production sought to capitalize on the aesthetic of industrial science fiction. It tells the story of a futuristic mining crew struggling against the pressures of corporate interests and the hazards of deep-space extraction, reflecting the period's interest in gritty, blue-collar sci-fi narratives.
The series was directed by Hiroyuki Fukushima, who aimed to ground the show's mechanical designs in a sense of functional realism, contrasting the more fantastical space operas prevalent at the time. While the project was technically ambitious for a boutique studio like KSS, it received a modest reception upon release. Critics often point to its character-driven pacing and specific commitment to a hard-science aesthetic as its most notable contributions to the era's diverse OVA landscape.
