Where it came from
Mikeneko Holmes no Yuurei Joushu, or Mikeneko Holmes: The Ghost Castle, was produced in 1992 by Studio AIC as an original video animation. It is based on the long-running, highly popular mystery novel series by Jiro Akasaka featuring Katayama Yoshitaro and his calico cat, Holmes. The anime was created during the height of the series' cultural relevance in Japan, aiming to translate the lighthearted, deductive charm of the novels into the aesthetic of 1990s character-driven animation.
The production utilized the distinct visual style characteristic of AIC during the early nineties, prioritizing character expression to capture the interplay between the protagonist and his sentient feline partner. While it served as a standalone piece of media for fans of the source material, it remains a notable example of the era's tendency to adapt popular mystery literature into episodic anime formats. The project was received as a faithful, if compact, representation of Akasaka's iconic detective duo, maintaining the whimsical yet mystery-focused tone that defined the original books.
