Where it came from
Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club, or Minami Kamakura Kōkō Joshi Jitensha-Bu, premiered in 2017 as an anime adaptation of the manga series by Noriyuki Matsumoto. Produced by the studio J.C.Staff, the series was designed to highlight the scenic coastal landscapes of Kamakura while centering on the burgeoning hobby of recreational cycling. It follows Hiromi Maiharu, a high school student who moves to the city and discovers the joy of riding, ultimately forming a club with her peers to explore the local terrain on two wheels.
The production sought to emphasize the technical aspects of cycling, including gear maintenance and safety, while maintaining the lighthearted tone common to the 'slice-of-life' genre. By focusing on the specific geography of Kanagawa Prefecture, the series serves as a regional promotional work that encourages tourism in the area. While it received a modest reception compared to larger action-oriented titles, it is noted by enthusiasts for its focus on the therapeutic and communal aspects of cycling culture, staying true to the gentle aesthetic established in Matsumoto’s original source material.
