Where it came from
The Mini Vanguard series emerged in 2021 as a lighthearted spin-off of the long-running Cardfight!! Vanguard trading card game franchise. Produced by OLM, the animation studio renowned for its work on the Pokémon series, these ONA (Original Net Animation) shorts were designed to present the complex rules and lore of the card game in a more accessible, comedic format. The production aimed to broaden the franchise's appeal by emphasizing character interactions over the high-stakes drama typical of the main series.
The aesthetic of Mini Vanguard follows the 'chibi' design philosophy, characterized by exaggerated proportions and simplified features intended to convey charm and expressive humor. By stripping away the intense visual effects of the traditional anime adaptations, the character designers were able to focus on witty dialogue and slapstick scenarios. Upon release, the series was received by the fanbase as a refreshing, low-pressure companion piece that successfully humanized the recurring cast members within a bite-sized, episodic structure.
