Misérable Miracle

Misérable Miracle is a 2023 animated feature film directed by Ryo Orikasa and produced by Miyu Productions. The work is an adaptation of the 1972 poem of the same name by Henri Michaux, which chronicles the author's experiences under the influence of mescaline. Orikasa’s film seeks to translate the frantic, shifting nature of Michaux’s prose into a visual medium, employing a variety of experimental stop-motion and hand-drawn techniques to capture the sensory distortions described in the original text.

The production represents a collaborative effort between French and Japanese animation houses, aiming to bridge the gap between abstract poetry and contemporary animation. Critics have noted the film's success in utilizing rhythm and calligraphic movement to mirror the internal state of the poet. By focusing on the structural complexity of language and its disintegration during a hallucinatory state, Orikasa provides a tactile representation of what is fundamentally an internal, psychological experience, earning praise for its stylistic rigor and faithfulness to Michaux's surrealist vision.
