Where it came from
Misato-chan no Yume Nikki, or Misato-chan's Dream Diary, was released as a promotional original video animation in 1997. It serves as a lighthearted spin-off of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, produced by Gainax during the height of the series' cultural impact. The project was intended to provide a whimsical contrast to the intense psychological and apocalyptic themes of the main television series, focusing on the character Misato Katsuragi in a simplified, comedic format.
The animation features a distinctive, stylized art direction that shifts away from the gritty realism of the source material into a softer, character-centric aesthetic. It was developed for the LaserDisc format as part of the broader merchandising strategy for the franchise. While it was received by fans as a niche curiosity, it remains a notable example of the era's tendency to deconstruct popular anime protagonists through parody and brief, experimental shorts.
