The existence of Kappa, water imps, has long been believed in Japan. It was said that they lived in rivers and lakes. In fact, there were people who saw them. You can find Kappa as a subject in paintings, sculptures and stories. In the 20th century, Japan has become a highly industrialized country. Reclaimed lakes, rivers with concreted banks, large quantities of chemicals for the fields. Fish, insects, birds and animals lost their home. So did Kappa. This film depicts the waterside scene in Japan when Kappa lived vividly. We might have a chance to see them if we could prevent the further environmental pollution and make it easier for the other creatures to live.

Where it came from
Mizu no Sei Kappa Hyakuzu, translated as The Hundred Kappa of the Water Spirit, emerged from the Shirogumi studio as a creative exploration into traditional Japanese folklore. The project was conceived to translate the whimsical and often eerie essence of the kappa, a legendary water creature, into a visual medium that showcased the studio's technical prowess in character animation and environmental design. It was created to preserve and reinterpret regional legends for a contemporary audience, grounding fantastical myths in a cohesive narrative structure.
The visual design of the film leaned heavily into a blend of stylized character features and atmospheric landscapes, reflecting a deliberate effort to evoke a sense of wonder rather than mere caricature. Shirogumi, known for its expertise in 3D animation and visual effects, aimed to harmonize the classic depictions of the kappa found in woodblock prints with modern cinematic techniques. Upon its release, the film was noted for its aesthetic commitment to the lore, serving as a contemplative study of aquatic spirits within Japanese mythology.
