Mizuki Shigeru no Toono Monogatari

Mizuki Shigeru no Toono Monogatari was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2010 to commemorate the centennial of the publication of Kunio Yanagita's seminal 1910 work, Tōno Monogatari. The film serves as a biographical and interpretive adaptation of the folklore collection, centering on the experiences of the manga artist Shigeru Mizuki as he explores the mystical landscape of Tōno in Iwate Prefecture. By blending Mizuki’s signature artistic style with the eerie, atmospheric tales of the original text, the project aims to bridge the gap between early 20th-century anthropological observation and contemporary animation.

The production design draws heavily from Mizuki's distinct aesthetic, which balances grotesque imagery with poignant human warmth. Directed by Kenji Itoso, the film was designed to honor the legacy of the Tōno region while reflecting Mizuki's lifelong fascination with the supernatural, or yōkai. Upon its release, it was received as a respectful, contemplative tribute that highlights the cultural importance of Japanese folk storytelling, appealing both to followers of Mizuki’s storied career and those interested in the preservation of regional Japanese mythology.
