Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory - Mayfly of Space 2

Released in 1992, Mayfly of Space 2 serves as an original video animation (OVA) episode that bridges the narrative gap within the Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory series. Produced by Sunrise, this entry focuses on the character Cima Garahau, offering deeper insight into her background and the cynical perspective of the Zeon remnants following the One Year War. It emerged during a golden era for the Gundam franchise, where high-budget OVA productions allowed for more experimental, mature storytelling that stood apart from traditional television broadcast constraints.

The visual design and animation direction were heavily influenced by the high production values typical of early 90s Sunrise projects, emphasizing mechanical detail and character-driven drama. Under the guidance of director Takashi Imanishi, the work sought to ground the Gundam universe in a gritty, realistic military aesthetic. The series was well-received by fans for its technical prowess and its willingness to explore the ambiguous morality of its antagonists, establishing it as a definitive chapter in the Universal Century timeline.
