Where it came from
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 was released in 2006 as a direct continuation of the 2004 Hidden One Year War series. Produced by Bandai Visual, this three-episode OVA project shifted the focus to the final days of the One Year War from the perspective of the Zeon military’s 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit. The series served as an experimental showcase for Sunrise’s transition toward fully computer-generated imagery in mecha animation, moving away from traditional hand-drawn techniques to depict the visceral intensity of space combat.
The visual direction, overseen by director Takashi Imanishi, aimed for a more grounded, militaristic tone that emphasized the cold reality of advanced weaponry over the heroic tropes of earlier installments. By focusing on the crew of the transport ship JOT-99 Yotunheim, the production explored the tragic intersection of cutting-edge technology and human desperation. Upon its release, the series received attention for its ambitious technical departure, sparking ongoing discussion among fans regarding the efficacy of its CG animation style compared to the aesthetic hallmarks of the broader Gundam franchise.
