Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War

Released in 2004, Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War was produced by Sunrise as a commemorative project to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. This three-part OVA series was notable for its pioneering use of full 3D computer-generated imagery, a significant departure from the traditional hand-drawn animation that defined the long-running series. The project was helmed by director Takashi Imanishi, who aimed to explore the technical and human costs of the One Year War from the perspective of the Zeon military's 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit.

The design philosophy behind the series focused on a gritty, realistic portrayal of experimental weapon development, grounding the science fiction elements in a pseudo-documentary style. By centering the narrative on the engineers and test pilots responsible for failed or prototype mobile suits, the production team sought to humanize the side of the conflict often relegated to background villainy. Upon its release, the series received mixed but intrigued reception; while the early-aughts CG animation style is now considered dated by modern standards, critics praised its willingness to experiment with the franchise's tone and its detailed focus on industrial logistics within the Universal Century timeline.
