Produced by Sunrise, the series serves as a prequel to the seminal 1979 anime Mobile Suit Gundam, focusing on the early life of the antagonist Char Aznable and the political machinations of the Zeon Principality. This adaptation was developed to provide a modern visual update to the franchise's foundational history, condensing the theatrical OVAs into a thirteen-episode broadcast format.

The visual direction and character designs were heavily influenced by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the original character designer for the 1979 series and the author of the long-running manga series upon which this project is based. Yasuhiko sought to ground the heightened drama of the Universal Century timeline in a more detailed, contemporary animation aesthetic while maintaining the iconic mechanical silhouettes established by Kunio Okawara.
