Modest Heroes: Ponoc Short Films Theatre, Volume 1 was released in 2018 as the inaugural project of Studio Ponoc, a Japanese animation studio founded by former Studio Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. Conceived as an anthology of short films, the project was intended to establish the studio's creative voice and artistic philosophy following the departure of many key talents from Ghibli. The collection features three distinct works: 'Kanini & Kanino' directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, 'Life Ain't Gonna Lose' by Yoshiyuki Momose, and 'Invisible' by Akihiko Yamashita.

The design and artistic direction of the anthology were driven by a desire to explore the 'modest' heroic struggles of everyday characters, ranging from aquatic creatures to the mundane challenges of invisible individuals. By commissioning different veteran animators, Studio Ponoc sought to showcase a versatility in storytelling and visual style that honored traditional hand-drawn animation techniques.
