Where it came from
The Momoiro Bouenkyou Anime Edition, produced by Studio CHIPPAI and released in 2017, represents a specialized entry within the niche landscape of independent Japanese animation. Created as an original video animation (OVA) project, it was designed to appeal to enthusiasts of avant-garde aesthetic storytelling. The project emerged from a desire to blend traditional cel-style animation sensibilities with contemporary digital coloring techniques, aiming to provide a distinct visual experience that deviates from mainstream broadcast television standards.
The design philosophy behind the work focused on a vibrant, pastel-heavy color palette, which gives the production its signature look. The team at Studio CHIPPAI prioritized character-centric narrative arcs, intending for the animation to serve as a focused character study rather than a plot-driven epic. Upon its release, it was received primarily within dedicated collector circles, where it was noted for its commitment to its specific artistic style despite the limitations often faced by smaller, independent animation studios.
