Where it came from
Momiji is a two-part original video animation (OVA) produced by the Japanese studio NuTech Digital and released in 2002. It was created during a period when the studio sought to establish a foothold in the domestic and international animation markets by focusing on supernatural themes blended with character-driven drama. The production sought to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of the early 2000s, utilizing a blend of traditional animation styles common to the era's straight-to-video releases.
The series is centered on the eponymous character, whose narrative journey explores themes of destiny and mystery within a stylized, atmospheric setting. Design-wise, the work reflects the modest production budgets typical of independent animation studios at the time, prioritizing expressive character silhouettes and evocative background art over high-fidelity movement. Upon its release, it garnered a niche following among collectors of underground and experimental anime who appreciated its distinct visual identity and self-contained story arc.
