Where it came from
Mon Mon the Water Spider, titled Mizugumo Monmon in Japanese, was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki as an original short film for exclusive screening at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Produced by Studio Ghibli and released in 2006, the project reflects Miyazaki's long-standing interest in the microscopic world and the behavior of insects, which he observed and researched deeply before bringing the characters to life.
The film is notable for its innovative technical approach, as it was the first Ghibli production to utilize digital animation techniques, specifically 3D computer graphics, alongside traditional hand-drawn cel animation. Miyazaki sought to capture the fluid movement of the water spider while maintaining the studio's signature aesthetic, resulting in a whimsical and quiet narrative that highlights the delicate beauty of pond life, intentionally eschewing dialogue in favor of expressive visual storytelling.
