It took a little longer than he had hoped, but Kenji Hatano managed to become the #1 kyotei racer in Japan after winning his first SG Championship. His career is still young, though, and now he has others who want similar glory, like his old Yamato Academy classmates and new racers he's never gone up against before. However, a freak accident during a race results in his left hand and wrist being cut open by a propeller, which could very well end his career right as it truly started.

Where it came from
Monkey Turn V is the second season of the anime adaptation based on the popular manga series by Katsutoshi Kawai, which centers on the world of professional kyotei, or Japanese hydroplane racing. Produced by OLM and released in 2004, the series builds upon the narrative arc of protagonist Kenji Hatano, a high school swimmer who discovers a passion for the high-stakes, technical sport of boat racing. The series was designed to bring the intensity of the track to a wider audience, balancing the mechanical complexities of the racing circuit with character-driven growth.
The production sought to capture the adrenaline and specific culture of the sport, incorporating actual terminology and racing mechanics prevalent in the Japanese boat racing scene. While the series maintains a niche status among sports anime enthusiasts, it is noted for its commitment to the source material's educational approach to the sport. It was received by viewers as a faithful expansion of the original manga, valued primarily by fans of sports drama and those with an interest in the regional appeal of professional hydroplane racing.
