Mononoke

Mononoke emerged as a spin-off of the 2006 horror anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, specifically following the popular 'Bakeneko' arc. Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Kenji Nakamura, the series was designed to push the boundaries of television animation by utilizing a distinct, stylized aesthetic that mimicked traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and wash paintings. This visual direction was intended to evoke a sense of unease and surrealism that mirrored the mysterious, psychological nature of the folkloric spirits the protagonist, known as the Medicine Seller, encounters.
