Where it came from
The Mononoke feature film project, announced by Twin Engine, serves as a direct continuation and reimagining of the cult classic 2007 supernatural anime series. Produced following a period of hiatus for the franchise, the project was intended to bring the distinctive, woodblock-print-inspired aesthetic of the original work to a cinematic scale, focusing on the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he navigates the complex social hierarchies of Edo-era Japan.
The production process, spearheaded by Kenji Nakamura, faced notable public challenges, including the recasting of the lead voice actor. Despite these production hurdles, the film's design remains faithful to the series' roots, employing vibrant colors and experimental visual compositions that mimic traditional Japanese art styles. The project has been positioned as a celebration of the series' enduring appeal, aiming to bridge the gap between long-time fans and new audiences through its singular, hallucinatory visual language.
