Moomin

The 1990 Moomin television series, produced by Telescreen BV in collaboration with Moomin Characters and Fuji TV, represents the most globally recognized adaptation of Tove Jansson’s beloved literary world. Developed to coincide with the centennial of the character's conceptualization, this iteration sought to capture the melancholic yet whimsical spirit of the original books more faithfully than previous attempts, moving away from the surrealist leanings of earlier 1969 adaptations.

The series’ distinctive visual style was overseen by directors Hiroshi Saitō and Masayuki Kojima, who balanced Jansson's minimalist line art with the lush, painterly aesthetic of Nordic landscapes. The show achieved widespread acclaim across Europe and Japan for its philosophical depth and gentle storytelling, ultimately becoming a cultural touchstone that helped define the visual identity of the Moomins for subsequent generations of international viewers.
