You know how the story goes: girl crushes on guy, girl confesses feelings to guy, guy mistakes confession for a job application. Okay, maybe that's not how it usually goes, but that's what happens when Chiyo Sakura finally gets up the nerve to tell her classroom crush Nozaki how she feels. Since she doesn't know that he's secretly a manga artist who publishes under a female pen name, and he doesn't know that she doesn't know, he misunderstands and offers her a chance to work as his assistant instead of a date! But while it's not flowers and dancing, it is a chance to get closer to him, so Chiyo gamely accepts. And when Nozaki realizes how useful Chiyo can be in figuring out what girls find romantic, he'll be spending even more time with her "researching" while remaining completely clueless. Could Chiyo's romantic frustration possibly get any more drawn out of proportion?

Where it came from
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun was produced by Doga Kobo and released in 2014, serving as an adaptation of the ongoing four-panel manga series by Izumi Tsubaki. The narrative focuses on high school student Chiyo Sakura, who confesses her feelings to her classmate Umetarou Nozaki, only to discover that he is a prolific shojo manga artist who mistake her profession of love for a fan's adoration. The series is celebrated for its clever subversion of romance tropes and its comedic exploration of the creative process behind manga production.
The production team, led by director Mitsue Yamazaki, aimed to balance the series' rapid-fire gag comedy with the aesthetic sensibilities of the shojo genre Nozaki satirizes. By utilizing a bright, pastel-heavy color palette and expressive character designs, the studio successfully mirrored the tropes found within the fictional manga Nozaki creates. Upon its release, the series received significant critical acclaim for its tight scriptwriting, memorable ensemble cast, and its lighthearted, meta-commentary on the medium of shojo manga itself.
