Omake Special from the final DVD volume. The Special storyline has very little to do with the original series outside of having some of the same characters, and has a completely different storyline which does not fit into anything which came before it.

Where it came from
The MoonPhase Special, titled 'MoonPhase: Swimsuit Edition,' was produced by studio Shaft as a standalone OVA released in 2006. It serves as an extension of the 2004-2005 television anime adaptation of the manga series by Gekidan Inu Curry, known for its distinct, avant-garde aesthetic. This special was conceived as a lighthearted companion piece to the main series, leaning into the comedic and fanservice-oriented tropes common in the studio's mid-2000s output.
The production maintains the stylistic trademarks that define Shaft's early work, characterized by eccentric visual framing and experimental animation techniques. Under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo, the project sought to provide a brief, playful departure from the more dramatic narrative arcs of the original broadcast. While it is primarily regarded as a niche curio for dedicated fans of the franchise, it remains a notable example of the studio's early experimentation with surrealist visual storytelling before the more mainstream success of their later projects.
