Where it came from
Mooretsu Atarou, released in 1990, serves as the second television anime adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka's classic gag manga, which originally debuted in the late 1960s. Produced by Toei Animation, this iteration aimed to revitalize the chaotic, slapstick humor of the original series for a new generation of viewers, maintaining the surreal suburban environment where the titular character and his animal companions, most notably the devious cat Nyarome, reside.
The character designs were updated to reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the early 1990s while preserving the distinct, round-featured artistic style that became a hallmark of Akatsuka's work. The series was designed to emphasize the absurd, fast-paced comedy that characterized the creator's legacy, balancing nostalgic appeal with a refreshed production quality that sought to introduce the property to a younger demographic accustomed to more modern animation techniques.
