Where it came from
Mr. Osomatsu the Movie: Prologue Theater was released in 2019 as a promotional companion piece to the feature film Osomatsu-san the Movie. It serves as a narrative bridge, designed to provide fans with additional context and character-driven vignettes that explore the mundane, comedic, and often surreal daily lives of the Matsuno sextuplets leading up to the events of the theatrical release.
The production maintains the aesthetic established by the Studio Pierrot reboot, which modernized Fujio Akatsuka’s original 1960s character designs for a contemporary audience. By balancing slapstick humor with the existential dread of adulthood, the creators aimed to satisfy the dedicated fanbase that grew out of the 2015 series revival. It was well-received by devotees for its commitment to the irreverent, meta-fictional tone that has come to define the modern franchise.
