Where it came from
Mu Di, or The Shepherd's Flute, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1963. It stands as a pinnacle of Chinese ink-wash animation, a technique pioneered by the studio that sought to bring the fluid, atmospheric beauty of traditional brush painting to the screen. The film was created during a period of artistic experimentation in Chinese cinema, focusing on lyrical storytelling and the synthesis of classical aesthetics with the medium of animation.
The film was directed by Te Wei, a foundational figure in Chinese animation, and designed by the celebrated painter Li Keran. Their collaboration aimed to evoke a sense of meditative stillness and harmony between man and nature, centering on the bond between an old shepherd and a young boy. Upon its release, it gained international acclaim for its sophisticated visual style, which eschewed traditional cel outlines in favor of layered ink washes that captured the softness of mist and mountain landscapes.
