Where it came from
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku, known in English as The Legend of Koizumi, originated as a manga series by Hideki Owada before being adapted into a three-episode original video animation by TYO Animations in 2010. The work is a satirical take on political manga, depicting world leaders, such as Junichiro Koizumi and George W. Bush, settling international geopolitical disputes through high-stakes mahjong matches.
The production leans heavily into absurdism and surreal visual tropes typical of early 2010s cult anime, intentionally subverting the serious tone of political dramas. While the reception was niche, it gained a devoted following among fans of irreverent dark comedy for its bold stylistic choices and its commitment to an increasingly bizarre narrative structure that escalated the scale of its mahjong games to planetary proportions.
