On or around the release of the first game in the series on the Famicom, a 3-minute promotional anime was created to advertise the game. More than a commercial, less than a special, the piece tells a highly abbreviated version of the game's story (spoiling its biggest twist!).

Where it came from
Mugen Senshi Valis, released as an original video animation in 1986, serves as a direct tie-in to the popular Japanese side-scrolling action game of the same name. Produced by Sunrise, the project was intended to capitalize on the rising popularity of the PC-8801 game, blending the medium of high-fantasy gaming with the visual tropes of 1980s anime. It represents an early example of the multimedia synergy that would become commonplace in the Japanese entertainment industry throughout the late twentieth century.
The production sought to translate the game's high-stakes narrative—centering on a high school student tasked with wielding the mystical Valis sword—into a cinematic experience. While the animation style reflects the bold, sharp lines characteristic of mid-eighties Sunrise productions, the OAV was received primarily as a promotional artifact rather than a standalone narrative masterpiece. Its historical value today lies largely in its status as a foundational entry in the magical girl-warrior subgenre, capturing the specific aesthetic transition between retro gaming design and serialized anime storytelling.
