Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation originated as a manga series by Yoshiyuki Nishi, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2004 to 2008. The 2018 anime adaptation was produced by Studio DEEN, arriving over a decade after the manga concluded, which served as a nostalgic revival for long-time fans who had followed the series during its original run. The narrative follows Toru Muhyo, a genius executor of magical law, and his assistant, Jiro Roji, as they resolve supernatural disputes in a world where ghosts and spirits frequently interfere with human affairs.

The character designs were handled by Hiroyuki Satani, who sought to translate Nishi's distinct, sometimes grotesque, and atmospheric art style into an animated format. The series aimed to balance dark, gothic horror elements with the character-driven humor typical of its genre. Upon its release, the adaptation was received as a faithful rendering of the source material's tone, specifically highlighting the tension between the stoic, professional Muhyo and the empathetic, growing Roji.
