Mutou Guniang

Mutou Guniang, or The Wooden Girl, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1958 during a significant period of artistic expansion for the institution. The film was created as a stop-motion puppet animation, a medium the studio had begun to champion as a way to integrate traditional Chinese folk aesthetics with modern cinematic storytelling. It serves as an example of the studio’s commitment to adapting regional folklore into visual media, aimed at both domestic audiences and international festivals seeking unique cultural narratives.

The production relied on the meticulous craftsmanship of animators who specialized in puppet manipulation, focusing on tactile textures and expressive character designs that mirrored the simplicity of traditional wood carving. The film was well-received upon its release for its technical innovation, particularly in how the creators managed fluid movement within the rigid limitations of puppet theater. It stands as a testament to the mid-century golden age of Chinese animation, reflecting the studio's broader efforts to define a distinctive, non-Western style of animation for the global stage.
