Where it came from
My Dear was produced by Geidai Animation, the renowned graduate program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, known for fostering experimental and highly personal storytelling. The film emerged from a pedagogical environment that encourages students to push the boundaries of traditional animation techniques, often resulting in works that favor atmospheric resonance and thematic depth over conventional narrative structures.
The film is celebrated for its distinct visual language, which reflects the artistic sensibilities developed within the Geidai department. It is widely regarded as a significant example of independent Japanese animation, garnering attention at various international film festivals for its evocative direction and emotional restraint. Its reception among animation scholars and enthusiasts remains focused on its technical ingenuity and the melancholic, poetic quality characteristic of the studio's output.
