Where it came from
My Dear Flesh was produced by Geidai Animation, the graduate school program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, known for nurturing experimental and avant-garde filmmaking talents. The short film emerged from a rigorous academic environment that encourages students to push the boundaries of traditional animation techniques, often resulting in deeply personal and stylistically daring visual narratives.
The film is celebrated for its surrealist aesthetic and introspective thematic exploration. By utilizing the university's resources, the creators were able to experiment with distinct textures and pacing that diverge from commercial Japanese anime. Upon its release, it gained recognition within the international festival circuit for its evocative atmosphere and the technical proficiency displayed by its creators in manipulating medium and metaphor.
